why bagel exists
There's a moment most people know.
You apply for a role you're genuinely ready for. You know it. You feel it. And then — silence. Or worse, a rejection from a system that never actually looked at what you could do.
That moment is why Bagel exists.
The resume was built for a different world.
For decades, hiring has relied on a fundamental compromise. A document summarizing where you went to school, where you worked, and what you said you could do. It was never a true measure of capability — it was just the easiest proxy we had.
Then came AI.
Technology didn't fix the proxy. It amplified it. Today, job posts are flooded with hundreds of AI-generated, keyword-stuffed applications. Founders and hiring teams spend weekends wading through noise. High-potential candidates get filtered out before anyone sees what they can actually build.
We don't have an information problem. We have an evidenceproblem.
We believe hiring is one of the most consequential decisions a person and a company can make — and it's being made on the wrong information.
We believe the resume was never designed to show what someone can do. It was designed to show where they've been. And somewhere along the way, we decided that was good enough.
It isn't.
We believe the best candidate doesn't always get the job. We believe that's not an accident. It's a design flaw — one that's been in place so long we've stopped noticing it.
We believe credentials are a proxy. A degree tells you what someone studied. A job title tells you where they sat. School names don't write code. Formatted PDFs don't execute strategies. Keyword hacks don't solve real problems.
Work does. Real work.
We believe talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn't. And the gap between the two isn't a talent problem — it's a visibility problem.
We believe the hiring process shouldn't reward the people best at describing work. It should reward the people best at doing it.
We believe every candidate deserves to know where they stand— not after the rejection, not in silence, but before they invest their time and hope in an application that was never going to land.
We believe every founder and hiring team deserves to hire with certainty. Not because they got lucky. Because they had evidence.
We believe the resume had a good run. Its time is up.
We're building the world where the job goes to the person who can do it, not the person best at selling themselves.
Where merit isn't hidden behind formatting and keywords and credential filters.
Where a self-taught builder in Lagos and a recent grad in Chicago and a career switcher in London all get a fair shot — because what they can do is visible, verifiable, and impossible to ignore.
That world is closer than it looks. Bagel is building it.
